With the emergence of social media, so are the threats. It’s common that we all send and receive friend requests on social media platforms like Instagram, among others. 

However, once you accept, this could also be an invitation for blackmailing!   

In an incident that underscores this, a 39-year-old woman got a friend request on Instagram by a person named Anbu Alagan. 

After this, the two became good friends. It is needless to say that the two got themselves photographed. 

Threat using photographs

Later, using these photographs, he began blackmailing her. He threatened her that he would send those photos to her family members. 

In this way, he extorted Rs 8 lakh and even240 grams of gold jewellery! It is also learnt that the accused would pester her to send her nude photos and place newer extortion calls. 

Police arrests accused 

The incident took place in VV Puram Police Station limits. The police have now arrested him and further investigations are on.
