  • Nagaraj went to GT Mall with his father to watch a film
  • Nagaraj recorded interaction with security staff
  • They had to wait at Mall entrance for 30 minutes

Nagaraj hailing from the Aremallapur village in the Haveri district of Karnataka went to the GT Mall on Magadi Road along with his father to watch a film. The family is reported to be involved in agriculture as a profession. The security staff however stopped them at the entrance as Nagraj’s father had draped a Lungi. They had even provided the rationale that entry is restricted for those with a Lungi as their attire. The Mall Manager also spoke along similar lines.

The father and son duo had to wait at the Mall entrance for a period of 30 minutes. Nagaraj recorded the interaction with the security staff on his camera. They secured an entrance after a protracted struggle. The father-son duo spoke to NewsFirst about this humiliating experience.

A similar incident had unfolded at a metro station a while back. An apology is overdue from the GT Mall management.

Lungi is traditional attire in many parts of the Indian subcontinent. Any business establishment that operates out of India should therefore not have any objection to this attire. Furthermore this act can also be viewed as being blatantly classist. Whether legal action will be initiated against such restrictions remains to be seen.
