Over 5,900 licenses in Bengaluru have been revoked due to a surge in fatal accidents. In Bengaluru’s Urban and Rural districts, a total of 5,965 drivers had their licenses revoked for their involvement in fatal accidents.

Recent statistics reveal that 2,198 licenses were suspended in 2022-23, 1,417 in 2020-21, and 2,350 in 2021-22. The number of fatal accidents in Bengaluru has risen in 2022-23 compared to the previous two years, with 752 accidents occurring in 2022-23, as opposed to 621 in 2021-22 and 621 in 2020-21. Karnataka, overall, witnessed a total of 10,633 accidents in 2022-23.

The revocations are recommended for cases involving recurring traffic violations or instances of drunken driving, according to statistics provided by the transport department. The transport department holds the ultimate authority to grant or revoke licenses. The recommended suspension duration, typically ranging from three to six months, aims to improve road safety, promote traffic discipline, and deter errant drivers.

Under this system, individuals with suspended licenses are prohibited from operating vehicles for a specified period, with the exact duration ranging from three to six months based on the specific circumstances of the violation. Those who disregard the suspension and are caught driving during this period may face penalties of up to Rs 5,000.
