Bengaluru and Pune have been ranked among the world’s ten most congested cities, according to the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index. Bengaluru takes sixth place, with commuters taking an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. Pune follows closely in seventh, where the same distance takes around 27 minutes and 50 seconds. Both cities are grappling with severe traffic congestion, driven by rapid population growth and inadequate road infrastructure.
The index analyzed traffic data from 387 cities globally, measuring average travel time over a 10-kilometer stretch. This report provides insight into the growing congestion levels and their effects on travel time and quality of life in major cities.
In India, Bengaluru leads with a congestion rate of 63%, resulting in drivers losing an estimated 132 hours per year in traffic. The average speed in the city stands at just 18 km/h. Pune records a congestion level of 57%, with drivers losing about 128 hours annually and an average speed of 19 km/h.
Globally, London ranks as the most congested city, with commuters spending 37 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. The average speed in the UK capital is just 14 km/h.
The report underscores the need for improved infrastructure and better transport systems in heavily congested cities like Bengaluru and Pune.
