BBMP issues notices to shops located within residential premises

Shops operating within residential zones classified as 'commercial' entities

BBMP notices urge such property owners to settle property taxes

Shops located within residential premises in Bengaluru are now obligated to pay taxes, as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated the issuance of notices.

The BBMP, which has been actively reaching out to more than 6 lakh property tax defaulters via SMS, is extending this effort to include shops in residential areas, compelling them to fulfill their tax obligations.

Reportedly, according to a senior BBMP official, shops and small hotels operating within residential zones must be classified as ‘commercial’ entities and are required to remit taxes accordingly, aligning with established rules.

In addition, the BBMP is dispatching notices to property owners who have inaccurately assessed their properties, failed to declare new additions such as additional floors or rooms, and consequently evaded tax payments.

Numerous property owners have received notices from the BBMP, urging them to settle property taxes for units utilized for commercial purposes.

The notices highlight disparities in property tax assessments, coupled with accrued interest. In response to the prospect of BBMP enforcement measures, some property owners have promptly cleared their dues. Meanwhile, others are awaiting potential tax relief from the BBMP, especially those facing substantial dues amounting to lakhs.

The civic body is actively pursuing various avenues to enhance property tax collection.
