Advocate Shreyas Reddy faces visual challenges due to genetic condition

Initiated a PIL that sought audio announcements in public transport

Karnataka High Court directed state government to ensure safe travel

Despite advocate Shreyas Reddy facing visual challenges due to a genetic condition, he actively identifies overlooked aspects and brings them to the attention of relevant authorities. At 28 years old, he is committed to improving the lives of Bengalureans, particularly those with compromised vision.

Recently, audio services were reinstated on Namma Metro and state and corporation buses in Bengaluru, thanks to Reddy’s advocacy. Initiated through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought audio announcements in public transport, the Karnataka High Court directed the state government to ensure comfortable and safe travel for differently-abled individuals, including the visually impaired.

Reddy successfully argued the case, and on December 18, 2023, the court ruled in his favour. However, he notes that some buses are yet to implement the audio facility.

Recognizing his efforts, Reddy was honoured with the National Federation of the Blind (Karnataka) Excellency Award on World Braille Day. His journey has not been easy, having been diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at a young age. Despite facing rejection from 73 schools due to his visual impairment, he persisted in pursuing his dreams. A postgraduate in law, he is currently pursuing a PhD in ‘Disability Law and Constitution’ at Christ University.
