In a major move to address the city’s garbage woes, the state government is set to roll out a comprehensive garbage disposal scheme starting June 1.

The newly formed “Bangalore Solid Waste Management Company Limited” (BSWMCL) will spearhead this initiative, marking a significant shift in the city’s approach to waste management.

BSWMCL, a joint venture between the state government and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), aims to streamline garbage collection, transportation, and disposal. Under the new scheme, door-to-door garbage collection will be done by auto-rickshaws, which will then transport the waste to processing plants or designated quarries via tipper lorries.

The implementation will see the absorption of BBMP’s current garbage collection and disposal workforce into BSWMCL. This includes auto drivers, tipper drivers, compactor operators, and their helpers. Additionally, officers, ward-level engineers, staff, and marshals working in the solid waste department will now operate under the company, with their salaries being directly paid by BSWMCL.

The company will manage seven waste processing units across the city, ensuring efficient waste treatment. To support these operations, the state government and BBMP will provide annual grants to BSWMCL.

Meanwhile, civic workers and contract civic workers will remain under BBMP, focusing solely on sweeping and cleaning public spaces. Their salaries will continue to be disbursed by BBMP. In a related development, the state government has ordered the merger of the solid waste department with the health department, creating the new Health and Sanitation department.

This ambitious initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to improving urban sanitation and waste management in Bengaluru.
