SWR transfers 115 acres of land to K-RIDE through a long-term lease

Land transfer marks a pivotal progression for the 46.88-kilometer line of BSRP

This line links Heelalige in southernmost region to Rajanukunte in the north

In a significant advancement for the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), the South Western Railway (SWR) has transferred 115 acres of land to the Railway Infrastructure Development Company Limited (K-RIDE) through a long-term lease. This land transfer marks a pivotal progression for the 46.88-kilometer line, aiming to link Heelalige in the southernmost region to Rajanukunte in the northernmost part.

The agreement, inked on April 2, witnessed SWR reducing the land allocation for Corridor 2 from 157.07 acres to 85.707 acres. Yogesh Mohan, Divisional Railway Manager in Bengaluru, reportedly confirmed the fulfillment of land registration procedures, indicating advancement in the project.

K-RIDE, tasked with constructing the 149-kilometer BSRP, awarded L&T Limited the contract for designing and erecting viaducts for Corridor 4 (Kanaka Line) on December 30, 2023. However, the issuance of the Notice To Proceed (NTP) faced delays due to alignment approval and land agreement setbacks with the railways. Now that these hindrances have been surmounted, groundwork has initiated.

Corridor 4, slated to incorporate 19 stations, targets completion by December 2026, notwithstanding challenges due to the project’s sluggish pace. Additionally, K-RIDE has submitted a revised alignment plan for Corridor 1 (KSR Bengaluru-Devanahalli/Airport, spanning 41.4 kilometers) to SWR’s Bengaluru division, indicating progress in its planning phase.

Minister for Infrastructure Development MB Patil has stipulated a deadline of December 2027 for Corridor 1, dividing it into two phases for streamlined execution. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi setting a 40-month deadline in June 2022, the project, with a budget of Rs 15,767 crore, has encountered delays. Civil work contracts have only been awarded for two out of the four corridors, underscoring ongoing challenges in execution.
