A Bengaluru-based IT professional has lodged a complaint stating that he has been defrauded of an amount exceeding Rs 50 lakh in an online investment hoax, mirroring numerous incidents documented on the National Cyber Crime Portal in recent times.

According to the case submitted to the cybercrime division in Bengaluru, Darshan S alleged that he was tricked into transferring Rs 50.53 lakh while undertaking certain tasks, with promises of substantial returns.

The victim claimed that he fell for the perpetrators’ deception after observing initial profits in his account.

Darshan recounted being approached via messaging platforms such as Whatsapp and Telegram by an international number, tempting him with substantial profits in exchange for performing tasks assigned by unidentified individuals.

Initially, he made small investments and obtained profits, which led him to believe in the authenticity of the scheme. Subsequently, the fraudsters coaxed him into making larger investments, up to Rs 10 lakh, assuring him that he would receive a significant return on completing all assigned tasks.

According to a police official, “After coercing the victim to deposit more than Rs 50 lakh into various accounts, the scam perpetrators ceased communication and failed to honour the victim’s requests for the return of his funds.”
