A 19-year-old woman was diagnosed with a history of weight gain and an increase in abdominal size over the past year and a half. Upon examination, she was found to have a mass equivalent to 36 weeks of pregnancy. Radiological imaging revealed an ovarian cyst, prompting certain blood tests to rule out cancer. The patient underwent surgery, during which a specimen was sent for a frozen section analysis. The surgery was successful, and the patient is currently in stable condition.

The surgery took place at CANS MULTISPECIALITY HOSPITAL, with Dr. Chaitra S Niranthara, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, leading the surgical team, and anesthesia administered by Dr. Nanda Kumar and team.

What is ovarian cyst and how does it affect woman?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on a woman’s ovaries. They are common and often harmless, but can sometimes cause pain, bloating, or complications like rupture or torsion. In India, ovarian cysts affect a significant number of women, although precise statistics may vary. They can impact menstrual cycles, fertility, and overall reproductive health. While many cysts resolve on their own, others may require medical intervention. Regular gynecological check-ups are essential for early detection and appropriate management, ensuring the well-being of affected women across India.
