Recent data released by the Bengaluru Traffic Police paints a concerning picture for weekend travelers, indicating that Saturdays and Sundays are the most perilous days for motorists. The data, compiled from the past year, reveals that these two days alone accounted for over 32% of the 883 fatal accidents recorded in the city.

Comparing statistics from the previous year, the figures demonstrate a noticeable escalation in fatalities over the weekends. Fatalities on Sundays surged from 115 to 152, while Saturdays witnessed an increase from 103 to 133, marking a substantial rise of nearly 30%.

Although the average number of fatal accidents on other weekdays stands at around 120, translating to roughly 2.3 fatalities daily, the weekends emerge as particularly deadly for vehicle users navigating Bengaluru’s streets. This trend is attributed to the decreased traffic density during weekends, facilitating higher speeds among drivers.

Moreover, the data highlights an intriguing anomaly in the timing of fatal accidents. While historically, the hours between 9 pm and 6 am record the highest number of such incidents annually, last year saw a notable spike in accidents between 3 pm and 6 pm, witnessing a 48% increase compared to the previous year.

Despite these observations, traffic authorities remain puzzled about the exact reasons behind these trends, although they speculate that lower traffic density during the afternoon hours might play a role. Vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations remain paramount to mitigate such risks on Bengaluru’s roads.
