Spike attributed to Intensified ground-level enforcement

Bangalore Traffic Police’s efforts in curbing drunk driving have intensified, with a notable surge in cases recorded by the end of February.

Statistics reveal a concerning trend, with 2,163 instances of drunk driving registered in the city, representing a significant portion of last year’s total cases.

Despite this increase, police officials maintain that the positivity rate, indicating the proportion of individuals testing positive for alcohol among those checked, has remained consistent over the years.

In 2023, Bengaluru witnessed a substantial decrease in drunk driving cases compared to its previous year, attributed largely to enhanced enforcement measures. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth reportedly underscored the role of intensified ground-level enforcement in the rise of reported cases this year. He emphasizes that the positivity rate remains steady at 3-4%, highlighting the efficacy of enforcement efforts.

According to reports, senior traffic officers focus on two-wheelers during enforcement drives, which are conducted routinely near establishments serving alcohol. Furthermore, experts advocate for technological interventions to complement enforcement strategies.

As Bengaluru continues its battle against drunk driving, a multifaceted approach involving enforcement, awareness, and technological innovation emerges as the way forward.

This proactive approach, coupled with stringent insurance policies penalizing drunk driving, could contribute significantly to fostering responsible behavior on the roads.
