Tests would also be conducted to determine illegal drug consumption

Blood tests to be conducted in non-fatal accidents as well

3 years sentence awarded for fatal accident case in 2017

The Bengaluru Police have expanded on their strategy to tackle negligent driving in the city. Apart from checking for alcohol consumption which was the standard protocol up until now, tests would also be conducted to determine illegal drug consumption. The protocol involved carrying out blood tests in case fatal accidents occurred. However it will now be conducted even when the accidents are non-fatal. Joint Commissioner, Police (Traffic), MN Anucheth confirmed this development.

Cases resulting in death will be treated as culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Traffic East Division, Bengaluru posted an update about a judgement resulting in jail time for an individual indulged in negligent driving. “In a fatal accident case of Banaswadi Traffic PS for the year 2017 in which a minor child died, a conviction was awarded by Hon’ble court to the accused for 3 years and also imposed fine of Rs 2 lakhs. We are doing monitoring of all such accident cases to fetch more convictions,” the DCP posted on the microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

With such proactive measures in place, roads in Bengaluru are likely to become safer with the drivers being mandated to exercise precaution.
