Update May 10, 2024 at 12:05pm

Only 34 lakh vehicles have been registered so far

1.56 crore vehicles are yet to carry out registration

Rs 1000 will be charged if offence is repeated

The Karnataka Transport Department has already extended the deadline for vehicle owners to install the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) number plate. An official website was opened to allow citizens to register themselves. However that did not really have a large impact. This has made the Transport Department contemplate on the prospect of fines for non compliance.

Vehicles that were registered before April 2019 run the risk of penalties if the HSRP name plate installation hasn’t been made. Earlier a deadline of February 17th was given for vehicle owners. This was later extended until May 31st. 3 weeks remain for the deadline to lapse. However, only 34 lakh vehicles have been registered so far. As per data from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), there are 2.15 crore vehicles across Karnataka. The number of vehicles registered before 20-19 are 1.7 crore. 1.56 crore vehicles are yet to carry out the HSRP registration. Deadlines have been extended on 3 occasions. Starting from June 1st, vehicle owners not having carried out the HSRP registration will attract a fine of Rs 500. If the same offence is repeated, a fine of Rs 1000 will be charged.
