Manjula, 44, hailing from Veerapura near Kolar had lost her 4 fingers

In a marathon surgical procedure lasting 12 hours, doctors in Bengaluru successfully reattached four severed fingers of a farmer.

The woman lost her four fingers to a fodder-cutting machine, but prompt medical intervention and proper preservation of the severed digits contributed to her remarkable recovery.

The intricate surgery involved the reconstruction of arteries, veins, nerves, tendons, and the repair of fractured bones, with multiple surgeons working simultaneously to expedite the procedure.

The patient, Manjula, aged 44 and hailing from Veerapura near Kolar, encountered the accident while tending to her cows. Her thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers on her left hand were severed in the fodder-cutting machine, leading to their detachment. She was immediately rushed to a hospital in Kolar with her severed fingers before being referred to HOSMAT Hospital in Bengaluru.

During the painstaking 12-hour surgery, the surgical team meticulously reconstructed all the severed arteries, veins, nerves, and tendons, while also addressing the broken bones by employing surgical wires.

Manjula, who was discharged on October 6, is currently under a regimen of antibiotics and blood thinners to prevent blood clotting in the reattached vessels. Doctors anticipate that she will be able to resume her normal activities within 2-3 months.

In cases where fingers are severed, it is crucial to preserve them in plastic bags. The recommendation is to place ice cubes around the bag, but refrain from submerging the severed body part in ice water.
