GBA prepares a major redevelopment plan to restore and modernise the iconic Russell Market ahead of its centenary in 2027.
The iconic Russell Market in Shivajinagar is poised for a major transformation as the GBA has finalised a ₹140 crore redevelopment plan ahead of the market building’s 100-year completion in 2027. The project aims to restore the historic structure while upgrading the market into a modern commercial hub.

According to officials, the meat and fish section of the complex has weakened significantly, prompting the civic body to decide on demolishing the deteriorated block. In its place, a new structure with two basements, a ground floor, and three additional floors will be constructed. The work is planned in phases to avoid major disruption to ongoing commercial activity.
A key feature of the blueprint includes improved access to public transport, with plans to connect the market directly to the Shivajinagar bus stand and metro station.

While redevelopment is extensive, the GBA has emphasised that the heritage identity of the market will not be altered. The front block, fruit and vegetable shops, and the iconic clock tower will all be preserved to maintain the character of the 100-year-old landmark.
Once completed, the renewed market will house over 470 shops, supported by two basement-level parking facilities to ease congestion in the dense commercial zone. Officials said the project is expected to take 18 to 24 months from the start of construction.
The civic body has already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) at a cost of around ₹45 lakh, and tenders for the work will be invited soon.
The redevelopment is expected to give one of Bengaluru’s oldest trading hubs a modern look while safeguarding its historical charm.
