  • Kamaraj Road reopening likely in early January
  • Road closed since 2018 due to Metro works
  • Expected to ease MG Road traffic

A key arterial road linking MG Road, Cubbon Road and Commercial Street is likely to fully reopen in the first week of January, easing traffic congestion in central Bengaluru.

Residents and commuters in central Bengaluru are set to receive a major New Year boost, with Kamaraj Road, one of the city’s crucial arterial roads, likely to reopen fully after nearly six years. Officials indicate that the road could be opened to traffic in the first week of January, bringing long-awaited relief to thousands of daily commuters.

Kamaraj Road plays a vital role in the city’s traffic network, as it connects Hosur Road, Church Street and KR Puram via a major junction, while also serving as a key link between Cubbon Road and MG Road near the Cauvery Emporium junction. Its reopening is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on MG Road, which has borne the brunt of diversions over the years.

The road was shut as part of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) works, which included plans for a subterranean interchange connecting the Purple Line on MG Road with the upcoming Pink Line. Construction on Kamaraj Road began as early as 2018, with an initial target to complete the project by 2023.

However, the project faced multiple delays due to construction challenges and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing timelines far beyond initial estimates. In February 2025, authorities allowed limited movement by opening one lane on a covered section of the road, offering partial relief.

Now, officials confirm that the entire project has been completed at a cost of ₹3 crore, with all civil works finished. Once fully opened, Kamaraj Road is expected to cut travel time for commuters moving between Commercial Street and Cubbon Road towards Brigade Road and MG Road, improving overall traffic flow in the city’s core business district.

For Bengaluru’s residents, the reopening marks the end of a long wait, and a smoother start to the New Year.
