Days after Anthropic launched its India base in Bengaluru, OpenAI has announced plans to set up its own office in the city, expanding its footprint across Delhi, Mumbai, and now India’s tech capital.
Just days after Anthropic, the creator of Claude AI, opened its India office in Bengaluru, arch-rival OpenAI has announced plans to establish its own office in the Silicon City of India later this year. This will be OpenAI’s second major expansion in the country, marking a significant step in strengthening its India presence.
The announcement highlights India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India is emerging as a global leader in AI adoption, supported by strong technical talent, policy backing, and optimism about technology-driven growth.
“India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale. Through OpenAI for India, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India,” Altman said.

OpenAI has already established its presence in Delhi and is also planning to open another office in Mumbai, the country’s financial hub. The upcoming Bengaluru office will further strengthen its operational network across India.
This expansion is part of the broader OpenAI for India initiative, aimed at deepening collaboration with Indian technology firms, startups, and educational institutions. The programme focuses on developing AI skills, improving digital infrastructure, and creating local partnerships to ensure inclusive and large-scale AI adoption.
The move comes shortly after Anthropic launched its second Asian office in Bengaluru, following Japan, underlining the city’s growing reputation as a global hub for artificial intelligence research and development. With both major AI players setting up bases in Bengaluru, India’s role in shaping the future of AI is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
