In a major urban expansion push, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar confirmed that Anekal and nearby semi-urban areas of Bengaluru Urban district will soon come under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits.
Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the semi-urban and industrial belt of Anekal in Bengaluru Urban district will soon be brought under the limits of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). The move marks a major step in the state government’s plan to systematically expand the city’s administrative boundaries.
During his inspection visit to Muthanallur and nearby areas on Thursday, Shivakumar assessed civic conditions in regions likely to be included in the upcoming GBA expansion. He noted that essential amenities such as Cauvery water supply were already being extended to these regions and said that the inclusion of Anekal was imminent.
A committee headed by senior bureaucrat BS Patil is currently preparing a report on the inclusion of new areas into GBA limits. The committee has been tasked with holding consultations with legislators, MPs, resident welfare associations, and citizens before finalising recommendations. Shivakumar also announced that he will meet the public during the ‘Walk for Bengaluru’ event this weekend and later hold discussions with representatives from IT and BT companies in Mahadevapura and KR Puram.
Highlighting the need for administrative uniformity, the Deputy CM pointed out that nearly 2.5 million people live outside Bengaluru’s municipal limits, in places such as Whitefield, Electronics City, and parts of Yelahanka, which still function under panchayats. This fragmented structure, he explained, has resulted in uneven garbage collection and civic maintenance.

Shivakumar also toured the roads leading to major industrial hubs like Biocon and Infosys along Hosur Road. Addressing the issue of potholes, he said civic engineers are working continuously to fill them and, in some cases, are relaying entire road stretches. The works, he assured, would resume in full swing once the rains subside.
The planned inclusion of Anekal into GBA limits is seen as part of a larger blueprint to create a unified, accountable, and efficiently managed metropolitan region, aligning with Bengaluru’s rapid urbanisation and growing infrastructure needs.
