The underpass will link Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout with Mysuru Road and form a key part of the 11-km major arterial road network.

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has launched construction of a railway underpass at Challaghatta, using the advanced box-pushing technique to allow an 8-lane road to pass beneath an active railway line without halting train operations.

The upcoming underpass is designed to ensure a direct, seamless connection between Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout and Mysuru Road. It forms a major component of the 11-km major arterial road (MAR) that links Magadi Road and Mysuru Road, a shorter stretch of the future peripheral road network planned to merge with the proposed Peripheral Ring Road.

Senior officials from BDA described the initiative as a technically demanding engineering task. The project involves pushing massive precast concrete boxes, each weighing nearly 1,000 tonnes, under existing tracks. To execute the process safely, a section of the railway line, equal to the width required for the 8-lane corridor, is first cut and lifted using a large crane. The ballast and soil beneath are removed, and temporary tracks are installed to keep train services running smoothly.

Once temporary tracks are secured, the heavy concrete boxes are pushed into position beneath them, creating the underpass structure. BDA is carrying out this project in coordination with South Western Railway (SWR) officials to ensure uninterrupted train movement during the construction phase.

According to engineers overseeing the work, the entire operation has been scheduled to conclude within three months.
