Bengaluru commuter alleges BMTC conductor took double payment via UPI and cash

A Bengaluru commuter has accused a BMTC conductor of duping him by accepting both UPI and cash for a single fare, sparking an online warning for passengers to stay alert during digital transactions.

A Bengaluru commuter’s Reddit post about being allegedly scammed by a BMTC (Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation) conductor has gained widespread attention online, with many users echoing similar experiences and warning others to remain vigilant during UPI payments on city buses.

According to the post, the commuter said his UPI payment initially appeared to fail during a bus ride, prompting the conductor to ask for the fare in cash. However, the user later discovered that the digital transaction had actually gone through. “The conductor said the refund takes about 24 hours, but I found it strange because UPI refunds are usually instant,” the passenger wrote.

The commuter explained that the conductor’s response raised suspicion, but at the time, he had no proof to challenge it. After disembarking, he reviewed his UPI transaction and noticed the slip issued by the conductor contained a transaction ID. “That’s when I realised I was scammed,” he said. “If the payment hadn’t gone through, how could there be a transaction ID printed on the slip?”

The passenger alleged that the conductor pocketed the cash while generating a receipt for the already successful UPI payment. The post concluded with a warning for other commuters: “Always check your slip. If a transaction ID is mentioned, your payment has gone through, don’t pay again in cash.”
