Urban pigeon feeding in Bengaluru is causing respiratory and skin issues among residents, with doctors reporting cases of high fever, allergies, and lung problems linked to prolonged exposure.
Feeding pigeons across streets, homes, and public areas may seem harmless, but doctors warn it is posing serious health risks to humans. Residents in Bengaluru are increasingly facing respiratory problems, skin allergies, high fever, and other health issues linked to pigeon populations and feeding practices.
Dr. Kavita, a physician in Bengaluru, has reportedly suffered from respiratory problems for the past two years due to exposure to pigeons. She highlighted that pigeon droppings and prolonged proximity to these birds can trigger lung complications, pneumonia, skin rashes, high fever, asthma attacks, and even typhoid.

According to Dr. Kavita, feeding pigeons or housing them around residences can lead to numerous symptoms including:
• Skin allergies and rashes on the body
• Respiratory issues and breathing difficulties
• High fever and fatigue
• Vomiting and body pains
• Headaches and general weakness
She explained that pigeon droppings emit harmful microorganisms that can be inhaled, causing pneumonitis and other lung-related complications. Individuals with pre-existing conditions, particularly asthma, are at higher risk of severe attacks.

Health experts stress that halting pigeon feeding is crucial for public health safety. Authorities in Pune and Mumbai have already banned both pigeon keeping and feeding in public spaces due to similar health hazards.
Dr. Kavita urged citizens: “Stop feeding pigeons immediately. Avoid allowing them to gather near roads or homes. Protect yourself and your family from potential respiratory and skin illnesses caused by pigeons.”
