Bengaluru has been honoured on the international stage by Bloomberg Philanthropies for its commitment to reducing speed-related road crashes. The city was named among the eight winners of the first Initiative for Global Road Safety Speed Challenge, which acknowledges urban centers that have adopted and enforced safer speed limits in line with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.

The program, running from June 2023 to March 2025, called on cities worldwide to limit speeds to below 50 km/h in urban areas and under 30 km/h in high-risk zones, including schools and hospitals. Bengaluru earned a silver award for initiatives aimed at curbing speeding and protecting vulnerable road users.

The city’s measures include reducing speed limits around schools to 20–30 km/h, allocating ₹100 crore (approximately USD 11.6 million) to redesign 75 intersections for enhanced safety, and deploying a toll booth autopay system to strengthen enforcement of speeding fines.

Global estimates on accident deaths

According to global estimates, speeding contributes to nearly 600,000 deaths annually—accounting for half of all road traffic fatalities. With more than 1.19 million lives lost to crashes each year, WHO emphasizes that lower speeds significantly reduce the likelihood of severe injury or death in collisions.

As part of the recognition, Bengaluru will receive $75,000 to continue expanding its interventions. Bloomberg Philanthropies noted that the winning cities demonstrate scalable solutions—ranging from road redesigns and enforcement to public awareness campaigns—that can be replicated worldwide to save lives.
