A health department team has uncovered an unregistered scanning machine allegedly used for sex determination at a private hospital in Vijayanagar, exposing a racket suspected to be active for four years.
A suspected sex-determination network operating in Bengaluru came to light after health department officials raided a private hospital in Vijayanagar. The operation, carried out late on Wednesday, targeted Tanmaya Hospital located on Pipeline Road, following inputs that the facility had been using an unregistered scanning machine for several years.
Officials found that the hospital had allegedly operated the machine without informing the health department, violating mandatory registration rules. Preliminary checks indicated that the equipment had been in use for almost four years, raising suspicion of a covert foetal sex-determination racket running from the premises.

A joint team led by KPME officer Vivek Dorai and Bengaluru District Health Officer Ravindra Meti inspected the hospital, seized the unauthorised scanner, and issued a formal notice. Authorities stated that no documentation, licensing, or reporting related to the machine was available at the facility.
The crackdown has intensified scrutiny on the hospital’s activities, with investigators now examining records, staff involvement, and potential links to a broader illegal network. The health department has launched a detailed inquiry into whether the machine was used for unlawful sex determination, an offence under the PCPNDT Act.
Officials are currently compiling evidence to determine how long the setup functioned without oversight and whether more individuals or clinics are connected to the suspected racket. Further action will follow after the completion of the investigation.
