Bengaluru-Hosur Road caved in near Chandapura during NHAI excavation, causing traffic chaos; repair and service road works are underway
A section of the busy Bengaluru-Hosur Road near Chandapura caved in on Wednesday afternoon, causing major traffic disruptions along the NH-44 corridor. The incident occurred during ongoing road-widening work being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Officials explained that the collapse happened during deep excavation for new vehicular overpasses (VOPs) planned to reduce accidents at black spots in the area. Of the three proposed overpasses, construction has already begun on two, with retaining walls nearing completion. The design involves lowering the national highway to a minus-one level while keeping local traffic at grade.

According to NHAI engineers, the cave-in was triggered when excess width gave way during excavation. To stabilize the stretch, soil is being refilled to prevent further slipping. A parallel service road is also under construction and will be completed first, allowing traffic to be diverted before further excavation resumes on the affected portion.
The sudden collapse created bottlenecks on one of Bengaluru’s busiest highways, underscoring the challenges of executing large-scale infrastructure projects in high-traffic zones. Repair work has already begun, with NHAI assuring that measures are being taken to restore safe movement and minimize disruption.
