Bengaluru Metro marks 14 years of transforming city travel. Launched in 2011 from MG Road to Baiyappanahalli, it carried over 1 crore passengers in 12 days and has since expanded from six stations to cover major city corridors.

Bengaluru Metro celebrates 14 years of revolutionising urban transport, starting with the MG Road-Baiyappanahalli corridor in 2011, carrying millions of passengers and expanding rapidly across the city.

Bengaluru Metro, the lifeline that transformed commuting in the Silicon City, celebrates 14 years of operation. The city’s first metro corridor, stretching from MG Road to Baiyappanahalli, began service on October 20, 2011, marking a milestone in urban transport.

The foundation stone was laid by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on June 24, 2006, followed by the commencement of civil work on April 15, 2007. Within the first three days of operation, 169,019 passengers traveled along the corridor. By the fourth day, ridership crossed 2 lakh, and in just 12 days, over 1 crore passengers had used the metro.

Originally spanning 6 km with six stations-Baiyappanahalli, Swami Vivekananda Road, Indiranagar, Halasuru, Trinity, and MG Road, the metro has since expanded, with the Purple Line now stretching from Chalaghatta to Kadugodi, covering key city areas and connecting residential and commercial hubs.
