Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Phase 3 begins, expanding network from 96 km to 175 km by 2027 with new lines, Airport link, and suburban extensions
Bengaluru is set for a major boost in public transport as Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the long-awaited Phase 3 of Namma Metro has officially entered the execution stage. The city’s metro rail network, currently spanning 96 km, is expected to expand to 175 km by December 2027.
Speaking after a review meeting with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials, Shivakumar highlighted the recent success of the Yellow Line, which was commissioned under the present government. The 19.15 km corridor has quickly become a vital link, recording nearly one lakh daily passengers. Police data indicates traffic congestion along the Yellow Line has reduced by about 30%, underscoring the metro’s role as a reliable alternative to private vehicles.

Outlining the roadmap, the Deputy CM said 41 km of new lines will be commissioned in 2026, followed by another 38 km, including the much-anticipated Airport Line, by the end of 2027. Plans are also underway to extend connectivity to Tavarekere, Hosakote, Bidadi, and Nelamangala, with detailed project reports being prepared.
The expansion is expected to ease Bengaluru’s chronic traffic woes, improve air quality, and provide faster, more sustainable travel options for millions of commuters. With the city’s population continuing to grow rapidly, officials believe the metro network will play a crucial role in shaping Bengaluru’s future mobility.
Shivakumar emphasized that the government is committed to accelerating construction and ensuring timely delivery, marking Phase 3 as a turning point in the city’s transport journey.
