Bengaluru Metro makes history: First-ever organ transport operation via Namma Metro saves critical patient

A human liver was transported across the city in under an hour using a metro train, creating a historic moment for urban mobility and medical emergencies in Bengaluru.

In a groundbreaking development for emergency medical logistics, Bengaluru's Namma Metro successfully facilitated the city’s first-ever organ transport via metro train on Friday night. The operation, executed with military-like precision by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), transported a donated human liver from Vydehi Hospital in Whitefield to Sparsh Hospital in Rajarajeshwari Nagar (R.R. Nagar) in just over an hour , a journey that would typically take over three hours by road during peak traffic hours.

The liver, retrieved from a 24-year-old accident victim, was destined for a critically ill patient suffering from severe liver failure due to hepatitis. The recipient, a young man awaiting a suitable donor for over two months, underwent a successful transplant surgery that concluded early Saturday morning.

The medical team, comprising one doctor and seven staff, moved the organ from Vydehi Hospital to the Whitefield Metro Station at 8:38 p.m. Green corridors ensured smooth movement between hospital and station. The team boarded a train at 8:42 PM, reaching R.R. Nagar at 9:48 PM. Upon arrival, another team of metro officials and security personnel swiftly transferred the organ to a waiting ambulance, which rushed it to Sparsh Hospital in time for surgery.

The operation followed strict protocols outlined by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and BMRCL's Joint Procedure Order. Officials confirmed that this is only the second instance of metro-assisted organ transport in India, following a similar operation in Hyderabad in January 2025.

According to BMRCL, this event demonstrates how urban infrastructure, when used innovatively, can save lives. Metro officials praised the coordination between hospitals, metro staff, and civic authorities for making the historic mission possible.
