Bengaluru motorists rush to clear fines as rebate scheme takes off, ₹4.18 crore collected on day one

Bengaluru witnessed a surge of activity on August 23 as thousands of motorists rushed to take advantage of a newly launched traffic fine rebate scheme. The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) recorded collections of ₹4.18 crore on the very first day, with 1,48,747 cases settled across the city.

The scheme, which offers a 50% concession on long-pending traffic penalties, is aimed at easing the financial burden on vehicle owners while encouraging them to regularize dues. The limited-time rebate window runs from August 23 to September 12, providing motorists with just under three weeks to clear outstanding challans at half the original cost.

Payment channels 

Payments can be made through a variety of channels for convenience. Motorists may use the Karnataka State Police app, the BTP ASTraM app, and online portals such as Karnataka One and Bangalore One. Those who prefer in-person transactions can also visit nearby traffic police stations or the Traffic Management Centre with their vehicle registration details.

The overwhelming response on the opening day reflects the public’s eagerness to take advantage of the concession. Traffic authorities expect collections to rise steadily through the scheme’s duration, citing last year’s rebate drive as an indicator of its potential success. In 2023, a similar discount initiative saw over two lakh cases cleared, generating more than ₹5.6 crore.

With encouraging figures already recorded, officials anticipate that this year’s rebate programme will witness even greater participation from Bengaluru’s motorists.
