  • New skydeck site proposed in west Bengaluru
  • Challaghatta location is sixth option so far
  • Project cost estimated at ₹500 crore

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar inspects 46-acre Challaghatta–Bheemanakuppe site, the sixth location identified for the ₹500-crore skydeck project after repeated hurdles elsewhere.

Bengaluru’s long-discussed skydeck project, envisioned as a 250-metre-tall structure offering panoramic views of the city, has been proposed at a new location in the Challaghatta–Bheemanakuppe area in west Bengaluru. This is the sixth site identified since the idea was first proposed by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

On Thursday, Shivakumar inspected the 46-acre land parcel located off the Bengaluru–Mysuru access-controlled highway. The land was earlier notified by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) as part of the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout. Officials tracking the project indicated that this site is likely to be finalised, subject to clearances.

The skydeck project has seen multiple location changes over the years due to various challenges. Earlier locations considered included 10 acres at Baiyappanahalli, 25 acres at Hemmigepura, a land parcel owned by Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, 25 acres within the Bangalore University campus, and 30 acres at Kommaghatta. None of these sites could be finalised due to aviation safety restrictions, objections from local residents, students and faculty members, and feasibility issues related to terrain and safety.

Earlier in the day, after inaugurating a newly constructed ramp by BDA at the Hebbal Flyover junction, Shivakumar said land acquired earlier by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for a NICE Road project was explored for the skydeck. However, he said clearance was not given by NICE. He alleged that NICE believes it is “bigger than the government”.

If implemented at Challaghatta, the ₹500-crore skydeck project is expected to act as a catalyst for infrastructure development in and around the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout. For years, thousands of site allottees in the layout have been demanding better civic amenities, and officials believe the project could accelerate development in the region.
