GBA prepares a fresh proposal to the Karnataka Government to take up an ambitious 488 km white-topping project across Bengaluru between 2025 and 2028.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has set an ambitious two-year target to expand white-topping across the city, proposing to cover 488 km of major roads between 2025 and 2028. The civic body is preparing to submit the proposal to the Karnataka Government for approval before beginning the next phase of works.

Over the past several years, white-topping has emerged as one of Bengaluru’s most expensive but durable road development initiatives. Between 2016 and 2023, BBMP completed white-topping on 47 roads covering 124.17 km. Meanwhile, under the ongoing 2023-24 phase, work is progressing on 145.68 km across 104 roads, with most packages currently under execution.

GBA’s long-term plan now aims to significantly scale up the project. The new proposal outlines white-topping on 488 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads by 2028, marking the largest expansion of the project so far. Officials said tenders for the remaining 16.1 km under the current phase are already underway.

Under previous allocations, the government sanctioned ₹800 crore and escrow funds contributed another ₹900 crore, taking the total project value to ₹1,700 crore for 161.78 km of white-topping across 16 packages. Of these, 14 packages covering 145.68 km are already under active execution at a cost of ₹1,487 crore.

Once the state government grants approval, GBA plans to begin the next cycle of works immediately, aiming to complete the entire 488 km network within two years, transforming Bengaluru’s core road network into long-lasting cemented corridors.
