Cold wave triggers jump in cough, cold and respiratory infections; children and the elderly most affected.
Bengaluru is experiencing an intense cold spell, with temperatures dipping enough to leave residents shivering across the city. The sudden chill has led to a notable increase in winter-related health issues, particularly cases of cold, cough and nasal congestion. Hospitals are reporting a steady flow of patients seeking treatment for these seasonal ailments.
At KC General Hospital, outpatient numbers have risen sharply over the past few days. As per hospital data, the number of people coming in with symptoms such as runny nose, persistent cough, throat irritation and general cold-related discomfort has nearly doubled compared to the same period last year. Doctors also note an uptick in respiratory illnesses, which tend to flare up during extended periods of low temperatures.

Children and senior citizens are currently the most vulnerable, showing higher susceptibility to complications arising from the cold. Dr. Shubha indicated that a combination of sudden temperature variations, early-morning exposure to chilly air and weakened immunity are key contributors to the spike in cases.
To help residents manage the weather safely, Dr. Shubha recommended adopting simple preventive habits.
Warm and freshly cooked food is advised to maintain body temperature
Avoid refrigerated food during this period
Wearing sweaters or layered clothing while stepping outdoors can reduce exposure to cold winds
Reducing early-morning and late-night travel
Avoid excessive smoking, which can aggravate respiratory issues
