Bengaluru Suburban Railway expansion on track: Corridor 2 & 4 to be completed by December 2030

State government allocates substantial funds for Bengaluru’s suburban rail expansion, new airports, and railway doubling projects to ease congestion and enhance connectivity.

The Karnataka government has unveiled ambitious infrastructure plans in the state budget, emphasizing the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project and airport development to tackle growing transport demands.

Bengaluru Suburban Railway Expansion

The state is implementing nine suburban railway routes in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways on a 50:50 cost-sharing model. So far, ₹2,950 crore has been spent on land acquisition, and ₹2,682 crore on construction works.

•    Corridor 2 (Benniganahalli - Chikka Banavara): Land acquisition is complete, and construction is in progress.

•    Corridor 4 (Heelalige - Rajankunte): Land acquisition is ongoing, with completion of both corridors targeted by December 2030.

Baiyappanahalli - Hosur & Yeshwanthpur - Channasandra Doubling Project: Total cost ₹812 crore, with the state government contributing ₹406 crore. Doubling works over 14 km have already been opened for public use. A provision of ₹100 crore has been allocated for this fiscal year.

For the current year, ₹500 crore has been earmarked to support ongoing work across suburban railway corridors, reflecting the government’s priority to enhance urban mobility.

Aviation Development

To decongest Kempegowda International Airport, India’s third-largest airport, the government has announced plans to develop a second airport in Bengaluru. A feasibility report will be prepared after consulting the Airports Authority of India.

•    So far, ₹1,593 crore has been released for the development of seven domestic airports in the state, with ₹200 crore allocated for the current year.
•    Flight training and aircraft manufacturing assembly activities will be undertaken on a PPP model at Vijayapura and Shivamogga airports, respectively.
•    In Tadadi, Uttara Kannada district, environmentally friendly facilities including walking corridors, tourist information centers, and accommodation will be developed through PPP projects.

The Karnataka government has made significant financial commitments to ensure progress:

•    Doubling projects and corridor expansions are scheduled to improve suburban connectivity for millions of commuters by 2030.
