Accused Karnal Kurai reveals chilling plan, sexual assault attempt, and murder of software engineer Sharmila in Ramamurthy Nagar; investigation exposes disturbing sequence of events.
In a major development in the Bengaluru techie murder case, the accused, 18-year-old Karnal Kurai, a resident of the victim’s neighbourhood, has confessed to the crime, revealing disturbing details of the brutal killing. The incident occurred on January 3 within the jurisdiction of Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station, at Subramanya Layout, sending shockwaves across the city.
The victim, Sharmila, a software engineer working at Accenture, was found dead in her home under suspicious circumstances. During police interrogation, Karnal Kurai admitted that he had carefully planned the crime. Investigators revealed that the accused conducted three rounds of reconnaissance near the victim’s house to understand her movements, entry points, and escape routes.
On the day of the incident, Karnal entered the house by sliding open the back door and attacked Sharmila from behind. When she resisted and struggled, her head struck the sofa, causing heavy bleeding. Despite this, the accused continued his assault and attempted to sexually abuse her. Even after she pleaded for mercy, he allegedly strangled her with both hands, leading to her death.

Following the murder, the accused reportedly removed her clothes, wiped the blood using them, and washed them with water in an attempt to destroy evidence. He admitted that during the sexual assault attempt, he experienced premature ejaculation. Later, he brought fresh clothes from her cupboard and dressed the victim to avoid raising suspicion. He then laid her body flat to make the scene appear less suspicious.
To further erase evidence, Karnal placed some clothes, including her top, on the bed and set fire to tissue paper, causing smoke inside the house. He accidentally left the victim’s pants behind, which he later threw onto a tree in the neighbouring house. He also stole Sharmila’s mobile phone, switched it off, and destroyed it before fleeing.
Despite these actions, police stated that key forensic evidence is still missing. The FSL report related to the sexual assault attempt is now crucial, as it could serve as a decisive witness. Investigators also noted that no usable fingerprints were found either inside the house or on the victim’s body. The smoke caused by the fire further damaged potential evidence.

Police suspect that the entire act was pre-planned and executed with a clear escape strategy. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to gather forensic proof to strengthen the case.
