To curb the growing circulation of counterfeit ghee, Karnataka Milk Federation plans to introduce QR-code-based verification on Nandini ghee packs, enabling consumers to instantly check product authenticity.
In a decisive step to eliminate the circulation of counterfeit ghee in the market, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to introduce QR codes on Nandini ghee packaging. This initiative aims to empower consumers to instantly verify product authenticity and ensure food safety.
With complaints of fake Nandini ghee rising, KMF has decided to implement a QR-code-based tracking system. Initially, this feature will be introduced exclusively on Nandini ghee packets and bottles. The move is expected to create a strong deterrent against counterfeiters and restore consumer confidence.
Officials said the QR code system is in its final stages of preparation and will be rolled out shortly.

How Will the QR Code System Work?
Under the new system, each ghee packet and bottle will carry a unique QR code. Consumers can scan this code using their smartphones to verify the authenticity of the product.
Once scanned, users will be prompted to enter a specific number displayed on the screen. After submitting the number, an OTP (one-time password) will be sent to their phone. On entering the OTP, complete product information will instantly appear.
The details provided will include:
• Manufacturing location
• Date of production
• Date of market release
• Market identification code

This transparent system will help customers confirm whether the ghee they purchased is genuine or fake.
At present, KMF plans to apply the QR code system only to ghee products, considering the high risk of adulteration and counterfeiting. However, officials have confirmed that there is a long-term plan to gradually extend this technology to other Nandini products as well.
Once implemented, this system is expected to significantly reduce the circulation of counterfeit ghee across Karnataka and beyond.
