American couple’s house theft triggers swift police action; Accused employee arrested

A burglary reported from Bengaluru’s Jeevan Bheemanagar police station limits has drawn international attention, after the United States Embassy directly approached the Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP and IGP) seeking immediate action.

The case involves an American couple from Texas, who were working as software professionals in Bengaluru and residing in a rented house. The couple has been identified as Meryl Moreno and her husband Tommo Kankanian.

According to police sources, while Tommo Kankanian had travelled to the United States, his wife Meryl Moreno had gone to work, when the theft took place. On returning home, she found valuables missing and immediately informed her husband.

Since the husband was in the US at the time, the matter was escalated through official channels, and a formal complaint was sent by the US Embassy directly to the Karnataka DGP regarding the theft.

Investigations revealed that the accused is Chandan Raul, a native of West Bengal, who had joined the household for work around a year ago. Police stated that the theft was committed on the 21st of this month.

During the burglary, the accused allegedly stole diamond jewellery, gold ornaments, and 600 US dollars kept in the house. The crime came to light only after the woman returned home and noticed the missing valuables.

Following the embassy’s complaint, Bengaluru police launched a swift operation and arrested the accused. Investigators found that Chandan Raul was attempting to convert the stolen US dollars and escape.
