After the Namma Metro’s double-decker structure, Bengaluru is set to witness another engineering marvel , a 1.2-km road-cum-suburban railway flyover at Mathikere under the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP).
Bengaluru’s skyline is set for another striking addition. After Namma Metro’s double-decker structure, the city will now have its first double-decker suburban railway flyover at Mathikere. The project, part of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), will combine both a road and a suburban rail track in a single vertical structure.
The ambitious 1.2-km road-cum-rail flyover will be built by Bengaluru Integrated Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise Limited (Bi-RIDE), a special purpose vehicle of Karnataka Railway Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE). Officials said the design aims to ease traffic congestion in one of North Bengaluru’s busiest corridors while supporting future suburban rail operations.

Authorities decided to take up the double-decker project after a request from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) earlier this year. Under the design, the road will occupy the lower deck, while the suburban railway track will run above it.
Earlier, the flyover work had been awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) under a variation order linked to the Mallige Line contract. However, the company opted not to continue and eventually terminated the original agreement. The project is now being reorganised and tendered in multiple packages to speed up implementation.
Package 1 includes a 7.795-km Rail Over Rail (ROR) viaduct between Benniganahalli and Shettihalli, featuring the Mathikere double-decker section and a dedicated double-decker station. It also covers pending works at Benniganahalli station. The completion deadline is 24 months.

Package 2 covers an 11.59-km at-grade section between Benniganahalli–Banaswadi–Hebbal, along with station boxes at Nagavara and Kanakanagar, to be completed in 18 months.
Package 3 will develop a 5.8-km at-grade stretch between Yeshwanthpur and Chikkabanavara, including a 185-metre elevated segment, also targeted for completion in 18 months.
Officials said the new structure will improve connectivity between central Bengaluru and its rapidly growing northern suburbs, while also decongesting key arterial routes. Once operational, the Mathikere double-decker flyover will stand as a major urban mobility milestone, blending modern infrastructure with efficient land use.
