Bengaluru North Corporation begins a trial to replace manual sweeping with mechanised machines, aiming to ease workload on pourakarmikas and improve road cleanliness.

In a move aimed at modernising civic services, the Bengaluru North Corporation on Thursday rolled out a pilot project to introduce mechanised road-cleaning machines, replacing traditional broom-based sweeping. The trial has been launched in Sahakar Nagar and will be closely monitored over the coming weeks.

Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar said the initiative is focused on improving the quality of daily road cleaning while also reducing the physical strain faced by pourakarmikas. As part of the pilot, mechanised sweepers and blower machines will be deployed to remove dust and waste more efficiently from roads.

Along with the cleaning machines, trolley-mounted dust bins will be used regularly to collect waste gathered during sweeping operations. Officials believe this will help prevent garbage from being left on roadsides and ensure quicker disposal.

The Commissioner said the project is being implemented on an experimental basis. Based on how effective and practical the machines prove to be during the trial period, the Corporation will prepare a detailed proposal and submit it to the government seeking approval to procure more such equipment.
