Match the combined power of the 37 existing supercomputers
The new supercomputer, which will soon be fully operational, is set to match the combined power of the 37 existing supercomputers across the country, which together deliver a total of 39 petaflops. This leap forward will significantly enhance India’s capacity for solving complex computational problems, with one petaflop equating to one quadrillion calculations per second.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, announced the decision at the Super Computing India 2025 event. He noted that the new facility will bolster the country's technological expertise, which has already supported over 10,000 researchers and contributed to more than 1,250 research papers.
The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the National Supercomputing Mission, is spearheading the project. Although Pune was initially considered for the installation, the project was moved to Bengaluru due to delays in approvals and the city’s superior technological infrastructure.
With its vast potential, the new supercomputer will facilitate breakthroughs in weather forecasting, space exploration, drug discovery, and national security simulations, cementing Bengaluru’s role as India’s innovation capital.
