  • Bengaluru AQI between 140 and 175
  • Masks advised for children, elderly, and patients
  • Coastal and southern cities record clean air

Traffic congestion and dust have pushed air pollution levels up in Bengaluru, while cities like Mangaluru, Udupi, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar continue to record clean and healthy air.

Air quality in several major cities of Karnataka has shown a worrying decline, with Bengaluru recording poor air levels, while coastal and southern regions continue to enjoy clean and healthy air, according to the latest reports.

In Bengaluru, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has ranged between 140 and 175, placing the city in the poor to unhealthy category. Areas such as Hebbal, Silk Board Junction, and BTM Layout have reported AQI levels touching 158, indicating deteriorating air conditions.

Experts attribute the decline mainly to heavy traffic congestion, increased dust, and misty weather, which together trap pollutants close to the ground. The situation has led to discomfort among residents, especially during peak traffic hours.

Health officials have strongly advised children, senior citizens, and people suffering from respiratory issues to wear masks and limit outdoor exposure. Those with asthma, allergies, or breathing difficulties are particularly vulnerable under such conditions.

While Bengaluru struggles with pollution, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Udupi, and Chamarajanagar are witnessing clean and fresh air, making these cities suitable for outdoor activities and exercise. These regions continue to fall in the good category on the AQI scale.

Understanding Air Quality Index (AQI):

•    Good: 0 - 50
•    Moderate: 50 - 100
•    Poor: 100 - 150
•    Unhealthy: 150 - 200
•    Severe: 200 - 300
•    Hazardous: 300 -500+

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and follow health advisories until air quality improves.
