GBA to install border towers for five corporations; move echoes Kempegowda’s vision

Boundary Towers to Define Civic Limits

With the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officially replacing the BBMP, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar has proposed erecting boundary towers to mark the limits of the city’s five new corporations. Speaking at the GBA headquarters launch, he said this will help citizens easily identify which civic body to approach for services.

Historic Echo of Kempegowda’s Vision

The move recalls Bengaluru’s founder Kempegowda, who set up four iconic watch towers in the 16th century to define the city’s boundaries, at Lalbagh, Gavipura, Mehkri Circle, and Ulsoor. While BBMP once planned to build similar towers on arterial roads in 2014, the project never took off. Reviving the idea links Bengaluru’s heritage with its modern expansion.

Administrative Restructuring Under GBA

Shivakumar also announced the addition of 300 engineers, with one appointed to every ward, and nearly 500 engineers at lower levels to ensure transparency. A proposal to increase wards from 198 to 500 has been made, with ₹300 crore allocated for salaries and pensions. Municipal elections will be held before considering mergers, he clarified.

Naming the Authority & Language Concerns

On calls to include Kannada in the GBA title, Shivakumar said the government will seek public advice for a suitable name, stressing there is “no question of ignoring the mother tongue.”

Patience Over Potholes: GBA Chief Speaks

Meanwhile, GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao urged citizens to be patient about pothole repairs. He explained that rain, ongoing BWSSB pipeline works, and premature road usage are delaying permanent fixes on stretches like Bannerghatta Road and Silk Board Junction.
