Bengaluru’s Russell Market to get heritage makeover – DPR finalised, big revamp ahead

The Detailed Project Report for redeveloping Bengaluru’s iconic Russell Market is finalised. The project will modernise the market while preserving its 1927 heritage charm.

Bengaluru’s iconic Russell Market in Shivajinagar is set for a long-awaited transformation. Bengaluru Central City Commissioner Rajendra Cholan announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the market’s redevelopment has been finalised, paving the way for a major upgrade of the 1927 landmark.

During his inspection of civic works in Shivajinagar, Cholan instructed officials to expedite the project while ensuring the market’s rich heritage is preserved. “Russell Market is not just a commercial hub; it’s a cultural symbol of Bengaluru. The redevelopment will modernise facilities while retaining its architectural legacy,” he said.

The revamp includes new parking facilities, upgraded underground drainage, continuous water and power supply, fire safety systems, toilets, improved solid waste management, solar energy installations, and rainwater harvesting.

Cholan also directed a cleanliness drive around the market and strict action against indiscriminate garbage dumping. Stormwater drains in the locality will be desilted to prevent flooding during rains.

Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, who accompanied the commissioner, assured full community cooperation for the redevelopment. “Russell Market has been the heart of Shivajinagar for nearly a century. We will ensure its heritage is not compromised while giving citizens a safer, cleaner, and more efficient marketplace,” he said.
