Kiran Mazumdar‑Shaw called Hosur airport rejection a setback for South Bengaluru, as Defence cited HAL airspace needs, sparking debate on alternatives

Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar‑Shaw has voiced disappointment over reports that the Centre has declined clearance for the proposed Hosur airport, reigniting debate on the need for a second airport to serve Bengaluru. She noted that the decision is a setback for residents of South Bengaluru and hoped that alternative proposals, such as the Kanakapura site, would be considered.

The Hosur project, put forward by the Tamil Nadu government, was seen as a strategic alternative to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), particularly for commuters from Bengaluru’s southern corridors who face long travel times to reach the city’s only operational airport. However, the Ministry of Defence rejected the proposal, citing the need to preserve airspace for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) operations. The decision was reportedly communicated through an official letter last week.

Officials expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of formal consultation between the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government before the rejection, arguing that a meeting could have allowed the state to present its case.

Mazumdar‑Shaw’s remarks reflect wider concerns among residents and industry stakeholders who view Hosur as a practical location due to its proximity to industrial clusters and southern Bengaluru. Social media reactions highlighted frustration over delays, with many urging authorities to fast‑track decisions on Bengaluru’s second airport. Users warned that prolonged indecision could hamper infrastructure growth and suggested that sites like Kanakapura or Bidadi should not remain stalled in approval cycles.

Others argued that airport planning should consider broader strategic and economic priorities rather than regional convenience. Suggestions included exploring Tumakuru as an alternative location or repurposing existing aviation infrastructure, such as assigning domestic operations to a secondary facility to ease congestion at KIA.
The rejection of Hosur has intensified calls for clarity and urgency in finalising Bengaluru’s long‑pending second airport project.
