Bengaluru’s BLR Design Centre on Church Street is set to unveil BLR Reads, a public reference library and multimedia archive dedicated to the city’s history and urban development. The launch will take place on Saturday, August 30.

The initiative, created by the MOD Foundation — an interdisciplinary institute focused on urban research and action — will curate books, maps, films, photographs, and oral histories that document Bengaluru’s transformation. The collection already includes more than 500 items ranging from archival maps and planning documents to academic texts, journals, and visual materials.

A hub for students, researchers, policymakers, and citizens

Unlike conventional libraries, the new space will place a strong emphasis on design, architecture, and the interaction between public and private development. It is envisioned as a hub where students, researchers, policymakers, and citizens can engage with knowledge resources and collaborate on ideas to address urban challenges such as infrastructure, mobility, and cultural preservation.

The launch will be marked by Re:Reading Bangalore, an exhibition that highlights books, films, songs, research projects, and artworks centred on the city. Scheduled activities across August 30 and 31 include two talks and a workshop exploring themes of design and urban history.

Open to the public on weekdays between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., the library will also offer membership options for individuals, institutions, and students. With its specialised focus, BLR Reads aims to build a shared space for reflection and dialogue on the issues shaping Bengaluru’s growth and identity.
