With 21 new six-coach train sets set to arrive from China, BMRCL is preparing to reallocate existing metro rakes to improve frequency on the Purple Line.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning a major reorganisation of its metro train fleet, with a proposal to shift existing trains from the Green Line to the Purple Line once new rakes are inducted.

As per the plan under consideration, all new train sets arriving from China will be deployed exclusively on the Green Line. Following this, the older trains currently operating on the Green Line will be relocated to the Purple Line to strengthen services on the busy Challaghatta-Whitefield corridor.

BMRCL is set to receive a total of 21 new six-coach train sets from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation. One of these trains has already arrived in January and is currently undergoing trial runs. Once the remaining trains are delivered, the corporation intends to use all of them on the Green Line.

Officials say maintaining the same type of trains across multiple depots poses operational and technical challenges. To avoid this, BMRCL has decided to centralise the maintenance of the new trains at the Peenya depot. Since the depot is aligned with the Green Line, all new trains will be fixed for operations on this corridor.

As a result, around 17 existing trains are likely to be shifted from the Green Line to the Purple Line. This redistribution will allow BMRCL to add more trains on the Purple Line, which is one of the city’s most heavily used metro routes.

The move is expected to reduce waiting times between trains on the Purple Line and improve overall commuter convenience. At the same time, the Green Line will benefit from a full fleet of modern trains with uniform maintenance and operations.
