Amid Basava Jayanti celebrations in Bengaluru, CM Siddaramaiah suggests renaming the city’s metro to “Basava Metro,” triggering public debate, political reactions, and discussions on cultural homage versus urban identity.

Bengaluru witnessed a lively discussion on cultural homage and urban identity as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during Basava Jayanti celebrations, suggested renaming the city’s metro network to “Basava Metro.” The CM stated he would recommend the change to the Central government, emphasizing the importance of honoring Basavanna’s legacy.

However, the proposal has ignited debate among citizens and political circles. Many Bengalureans oppose renaming the metro, insisting that the name “Bengaluru Metro” should remain unchanged. Some suggested that Basavanna’s name could instead be honored at a specific metro station or public institution, avoiding politicization of the revered saint’s name. Ideas ranged from naming Indira Canteen outlets to new institutions after Basavanna, rather than altering the metro’s identity.

During his speech, CM Siddaramaiah addressed calls from supporters urging him to name a metro station after Basava. He clarified that the renaming involves coordination with both state and central governments, and without the Centre’s approval, the plan cannot proceed. Nevertheless, he expressed readiness to pursue it if necessary, leaving the discussion open for further deliberation.

This is not the first naming controversy involving CM Siddaramaiah. Recently, he proposed renaming the Shivajinagar Metro Station to Shankar Nag Metro Station, replacing the original plan to call it St. Mary’s Metro Station. That move also sparked public debate, highlighting the sensitivities around renaming public infrastructure in Bengaluru.
