  • ‘Cobras’ identify and clear parking, signal, and flow issues
  • Real-time enforcement aims to boost discipline and reduce jams

Bengaluru Traffic Police launch ‘Cobra Beat’ initiative, a new on-ground response system designed to fix micro-level issues like illegal parking, bottlenecks, and wrong-side driving before they snowball into traffic jams.

In a bid to tackle Bengaluru’s chronic traffic congestion, the city’s traffic police have introduced a new initiative called the ‘Cobra Beat’ system, a proactive approach that focuses on identifying and solving small but recurring causes of gridlocks.

Under this system, each traffic police station will deploy a group of officers known as “Cobras”, who will act as first responders on two designated routes during peak hours. These officers will patrol their assigned stretches, watch for illegal parking, bottlenecks, and wrong-side driving, and immediately take corrective action. Depending on the station’s jurisdiction, each unit will have three to four Cobras working in rotation.

The initiative aims to tackle issues that are often overlooked, from poorly placed bus stops to unsynchronised traffic signals, which collectively contribute to massive delays. In fact, officials recently identified 103 bus stops that were obstructing traffic flow and began relocating them to improve road efficiency.

DCP (South) Gopal M Byakod said that even small lapses can cause significant delays. A single wrongly parked vehicle might cause a 10-second delay, but multiple such instances lead to minutes of wasted time and long queues, he explained.

The Cobras have been empowered to act on the spot, by clamping vehicles, issuing fines, and clearing obstructions without waiting for further orders. Areas like Commercial Street and Dispensary Road, known for recurring congestion, are among the first zones to be covered under the new system.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy has directed all Deputy Commissioners to identify critical stretches within their zones and begin immediate implementation. While the length and complexity of routes may differ, officials believe that the Cobra Beat system will bring real-time enforcement and better public discipline to the city’s chaotic roads.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police have also revived interception drives, increasing ground-level checks to catch visible violations such as lane indiscipline and signal jumping.
