A political debate has surfaced in Bengaluru after Yelahanka’s Ward 3 was renamed ‘Akash’, triggering questions about whether the name refers to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s son.
A local civic development has turned into a major talking point in Bengaluru after Yelahanka’s Ward 3 was recently renamed ‘Akash’. The change, part of the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s ongoing restructuring of ward boundaries and names, has triggered strong reactions and raised a new set of political questions.
The central concern revolves around the identity of the person after whom the ward has been named. The name ‘Akash’ has created speculation over whether it refers to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s son, also named Akash. With the city already witnessing intense political activity over power-sharing discussions, the sudden renaming has deepened curiosity and confusion.

Reports indicate that BJP MLA S.R. Vishwanath from Yelahanka has raised objections, arguing that the renaming lacks transparency. The MLA has questioned whether both individuals named Akash are the same and has sought an explanation from the GBA. The absence of clarity on the identity of the person honoured has intensified doubts.
The ward in question was earlier listed under a different name before the shift from BBMP to the GBA structure, which brought a major reorganisation of boundaries and new naming conventions. As the renaming process continues across the city, calls have now arisen to replace ‘Akash’ with traditional or locally significant names such as Venkatal or Maruthi Nagar. Additional demands include restoring the earlier designations, Ward 1 as Raj Kempegowda Ward and Ward 2 as Chowdeshwari Ward.
Much of the controversy stems from the unfamiliarity surrounding this particular ‘Akash’. There is no known public record of the individual’s achievements, contributions, or association with the area. This lack of background has become the centre of the debate, prompting residents to question why the name was chosen in the first place.

While the DCM, occupied with state-level political developments, has not responded to the issue so far, many believe the matter now requires an official explanation. With citizens seeking clarity and elected representatives demanding immediate revisions, GBA officials are expected to address the confusion and provide a transparent reasoning for the renaming.
Further updates are awaited as the issue continues to gain attention.
