A massive crane fell during early morning construction on the Bengaluru Metro Blue Line near the Outer Ring Road, with BMRCL citing a technical issue as the cause.

A major accident was narrowly avoided during Bengaluru Metro construction work early Monday morning when a huge crane toppled at a work site on the Metro Blue Line corridor, which connects the Outer Ring Road.

The incident occurred at around 3.45 am during ongoing construction work of the Blue Line, according to officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The crane was being used to lift a heavy steel girder when the mishap took place.

BMRCL Deputy Chief Engineer Sadashiva confirmed the incident and said that the crane suddenly malfunctioned due to a technical issue. He explained that while the steel girder was being lifted, one portion of the crane unexpectedly moved upward, causing it to lose balance and fall.

“The incident happened because of a technical problem. While lifting the steel girder, a part of the crane suddenly went up, leading to the accident,” the Deputy Chief Engineer said.

Officials clarified that the crane fell during the lifting operation and not after the work was completed. The sudden movement of the crane’s component is believed to have triggered the imbalance.

Fortunately, no workers or members of the public were injured in the incident, as it occurred in the early hours of the morning when activity around the site was minimal.

The Blue Line is a key Metro corridor designed to improve connectivity to the Outer Ring Road, which is one of Bengaluru’s busiest traffic stretches. Following the incident, BMRCL officials inspected the site and began assessing the technical fault to prevent similar incidents in the future.
