Jawahar Bal Bhavan to host an international-standard hybrid skate park, improving access and training for young skateboarders across the state.

Bengaluru’s Jawahar Bal Bhavan is set to become a major hub for skateboarding in Karnataka with the development of an international-standard skateboarding park inside Cubbon Park. The facility, designed to groom athletes for Olympic-level competitions, will be built on nearly half an acre of land at an estimated cost of ₹1.5 crore.

The project will be Karnataka’s first government-owned public skateboarding park and is expected to open by April or May 2026. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of January 2026, with authorities aiming to complete the work during the summer holiday period to ensure early public access.

At present, most skateboarders in Bengaluru depend on a handful of private skate parks located on the city’s outskirts. High usage fees and poor public transport connectivity have made regular training difficult for many aspiring athletes. Officials believe the centrally located Bal Bhavan campus, which is well connected by metro and bus services, will significantly improve accessibility and participation.

Due to limited space, planners have opted for a hybrid design that combines two internationally recognised competition formats, Street and Park, into a single integrated skating zone. This approach will allow skaters to practise both styles in one session instead of moving between separate areas.

The Park section will feature half pipes, quarter pipes, bowls, ledges, a fun box, a snake run and a structure inspired by an empty swimming pool with steep walls. These elements are designed to help skaters perform aerial tricks, spins and grabs. The Street section will mirror urban environments with rails, stair sets and ledges suited for slides, grinds and technical manoeuvres.

The facility will be open to skaters aged five years and above and can accommodate around 40 users at a time. Entry will be limited strictly to active skateboarders, and the space will not function as a general hangout area. Authorities are also considering offering skateboards on an hourly rental basis once the park becomes operational.

Officials have indicated that entry fees will be kept affordable to encourage wider participation and talent development, positioning the park as a key step in building a strong skateboarding ecosystem in Karnataka.
